Alwaght- Gunmen ambushed a vehicle carrying a Turkish official in southeast Turkey overnight and killed a guard, ahead of Sunday's historic referendum on presidential powers.
Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants were blamed for the attack that also injured one guard in the Muradiye district of the southeast's Van province. The outlawed PKK is widely regarded as a terrorist organization.
According to Turkey's state-run news agency, the attack was carried out with long-barreled weapons against the motorcade of district head Ibrahim Vanli.
"Vanli’s nephew and village guard, Adnan, who was following the motorcade was killed in the attack," Anadolu Agency reported.
The PKK have militants have launched a series of attacks since 2015, when a fragile peace process with the government collapsed.
The group has led a separatist insurgency since 1984. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since then.
