ALWAGHT- Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has directed the Foreign Ministry to urgently file a complaint with the UN Security Council over Israel’s construction of a concrete wall in southern Lebanon that crosses the UN-designated Blue Line.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has ordered the Foreign Ministry to file an urgent complaint with the UN Security Council, arguing that Israel’s construction of a concrete barrier in southern Lebanon violates Lebanese sovereignty and UN Resolution 1701. This resolution ended the 2006 war and requires Israel to respect Lebanon’s territorial integrity. The presidency noted that UN reports confirm the wall blocks more than 4,000 square meters of Lebanese land and contradict Israel’s denials.
UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, conducted a geospatial survey showing that the Israeli-built T-wall near the village of Yaroun extends beyond the UN-demarcated Blue Line. UNIFIL informed Israel of the encroachment and requested the wall’s removal, stressing that its construction constitutes a breach of Resolution 1701 and Lebanese sovereignty.
The dispute comes amid rising tensions in southern Lebanon, where Israel has continued near-daily airstrikes targeting Hezbollah and its infrastructure. The Israeli offensive, which began in October 2023 and intensified into a full-scale assault by September 2024, has killed more than 4,000 people and injured nearly 17,000.
Although a ceasefire was announced in November 2024 and Israel was expected to complete its withdrawal from southern Lebanon by January, the pullout remained incomplete. Israeli forces continue to occupy five border outposts, further fueling instability along the frontier.
