Alwaght- A terrorist has blown himself up at a funeral for the relative of a militia commander in Iraq’s Diyala province, killing at least 40 people.
Monday's bombing in Muqdadiya, in the eastern province of Diyala, killed six local commanders of the Hashd Shaabi umbrella group of militias who were attending the funeral ceremony, security officials and police said. A further 58 people were wounded.
ISIS terrorists claimed responsibility for the blast, according to a statement posted on the SITE monitoring group's Twitter account.
Four of the slain commanders were from the Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia and two from the Badr Organization.
The governor of Muqdadiyah, Adnan al-Tamimi, said an investigation has been launched into the incident. He said security forces swiftly reached the scene of the attack while ambulances carried the victims to the hospitals.
Iraqi officials declared victory over the insurgents in Diyala a year ago, but although it no longer controls significant territory in the eastern province, ISIS terrorists have remained active there.
On Sunday, a twin suicide bombing in Baghdad’s district of Sadr City left 78 people dead and more than 100 others wounded. ISIS terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
