UNIFIL: No Evidence of Hezbollah Rearming

UNIFIL: No Evidence of Hezbollah Rearming

ALWAGHT- UN peacekeepers in Lebanon have found no proof that Hezbollah is rearming, directly contradicting Israel's stated reason for attacks.

In a televised interview, the commander of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Diodato Abagnara, stated that he has seen "no evidence" to support Israeli claims that Hezbollah is rearming south of the Litani River. He strongly condemned ongoing Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon as a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement and warned that the security situation is "really fragile," where a single mistake could trigger a major escalation. Abagnara also highlighted that the continued presence of Israeli troops at five points along the border is a "flagrant" violation of UN resolutions.

The commander's remarks directly challenge a key Israeli justification for its military actions. He referenced UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war and requires Israel to respect Lebanese sovereignty, as well as the terms of a more recent November 2024 ceasefire agreement. Under that deal, Israel was obligated to fully withdraw its forces but has failed to do so, maintaining an illegal occupation at several border sites.

Since the November ceasefire took effect, Israel has repeatedly violated the agreement with assaults on Lebanese territory. Lebanese authorities have warned that these ongoing violations by Israel directly threaten national stability, underscoring the tension between the official truce and the reality of continued hostilities and occupation.
