ALWAGHT- US President Donald Trump has indicated that he is likely to hold in-person talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as soon as next week, also expressing a desire to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon.
Since taking office last month, President Trump’s administration has hinted at the possibility of peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, though no concrete details have been provided. Moscow officials have cautiously welcomed the prospect of dialogue, expressing guarded optimism about the potential for peace talks.
During a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the White House, Trump revealed that he is likely to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week, with discussions expected to take place on US soil. Trump also expressed his intention to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing his desire to end the war and noting that he has always maintained a good relationship with the Russian leader. He reiterated his belief that the conflict would not have started had he been in office in February 2022.
Trump also indicated that he would like to discuss the security of Ukraine’s rare-earth deposits with Zelensky, expressing interest in securing deals related to these resources. He criticized NATO’s European members for contributing less than the US to Ukraine’s support, promising to "equalize" the situation. In response, Zelensky expressed optimism about the potential for productive diplomacy in the coming weeks, with Ukrainian and American teams working together on the details of a potential peace agreement.
