British Muslims Barred from Going to US after Trump’s Call for Ban

Thursday 24 December 2015
British Muslims Barred from Going to US after Trump’s Call for Ban
Alwaght- There are indications that leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to ban all Muslims from entering the United States is being “implemented informally”.
Recently a British Muslim family was blocked from boarding planes for travel to the United States without explanation. A Muslim man in London says his family was barred because of their religion from boarding a plane bound for Los Angeles, where they planned to visit Disneyland with their children.
On December 15, the extended family waited at the gate. Their bags were on the plane. The family included Mohammad Tariq Mahmood with two of his children; his brother Zahid and sister-in-law Sadaf, with five of their children; and two nieces who were accompanying them.
While they waited to board the plane, Mohammad Mahmood was called on the intercom and told that at least some of the family would not be allowed to board. They were not given a reason for the ban, according to Mahmood. Their bags were removed from the plane, and they were ordered to return all the duty-free goods they had purchased, and then escorted from the airport.
Reports say several other  British Muslims are being stopped from going to the US following the Islamophobic remarks by Trump.
Following the incident, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, on Wednesday asked the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to investigate whether leading GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to ban all Muslim from entering the United States is being “implemented informally” by department officials.
In a letter to DHS, CAIR Senior Staff Attorney William Burgess wrote in part:
“Media reports indicate that a Muslim family of 11 was stopped by DHS officials from boarding a flight that would take them on a trip to Disneyland and that one British imam knew of 20 recent similar cases.
“DHS officials provided no justification whatsoever for their actions. The family had reportedly received approval by the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) for their travel to the U.S.”
CAIR’s letter quoted a report in The Telegraph, which said:
“There is ‘growing fear’ among British Muslims that aspects of [Donald] Trump's plans are becoming reality, even though they have been widely condemned. . . . Some Muslims believe the public condemnation of Trump's position ‘contrasts with what is going on in practice.’”
The letter continued:
“These concerns reflect a real and growing perception in the Muslim community that it is being increasingly targeted by DHS officials and that Donald Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entry into the United States is being implemented informally.
“We respectfully request that your office investigate these most recent incidents and ensure that DHS officials do not religiously profile those seeking to enter the United States.”
