Alwaght: It is one year the US President Barack Obama ordered a campaign against ISIS terrorist group but the Takfiri group remains strong and continues with its atrocities unabated.
According to a report by RT TV, one year on the US its allies have carried out 6,700 airstrikes at an expense of nearly $4 billion yet the terror group shows no sign of defeat and has even expanded its reach.
On September 10, 2014, Obama declared what he termed as a “comprehensive and sustained counterterrorism strategy” to “degrade, and ultimately destroy” ISIS terrorist group. US drones and warplanes had already been targeting the group since early August of 2014, after ISIS killed two American journalists it had been holding hostage.
According to official information provided by the Pentagon, since October 2014 , the US and its allies have flown 53,278 sorties “in support of operations” in Iraq and Syria, conducting a total of 6,700 airstrikes as of September 8, 2015,
While there is no official body count, ISIS casualties were estimated at over 8,500 in May of this year. The cost of the campaign has been estimated to be $9.9 million per day, totaling over $3.7 billion as of August 2015.
Meanwhile, civilians continue to die both at the hands of both ISIS terrorists and US-led airstrikes. According to a UK-based group, the Stop the War coalition, Western bombing has killed over 450 civilians – including 100 children – as of August.
Meanwhile Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, also stated on 1st September, that the US-led anti- coalition is ineffective, because it is not based on the legitimacy of the UN Security Council.
The minister said in a speech in Moscow that, “The role of the US-led coalition is ineffective because it is not based on the legitimacy of the UN Security Council.”
Lavrov also called for an end to “unrealistic and illogical” demands for the resignation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
“If we remove from the equation the entirely unrealistic and counterproductive demand of the resignation of Assad as a precondition for the fight against terrorism... we may work effectively,” Lavrov was quoted as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.He went on to say that the West has double standards when it comes to the legitimacy of Assad.
“It simply cannot be that, for the purpose of the destruction of chemical weapons Assad is legitimate, and for the purpose of fighting against terrorism he is not. It is not logical,” Lavrov said.
The conflict in Syria, which started in March 2011, has reportedly claimed more than 240,000 lives up until now.
The violence has also forced over four million Syrians to take refuge in neighboring countries, including Jordan and Lebanon. More than 7.2 million others have been displaced internally, according to UN figures.
Syria blames western countries led by the US and their regional allies including the Israeli regime, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey for being the main backers of terrorists fighting to topple the country’s legitimate government.
