Alwaght- Russian and French Presidents Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron called to preserve and implement in full the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program.
In a telephone conversation, which took place at the initiative of the French side, Putin and Macron called for the preservation of the nuclear agreement with Iran, as well as stressed the necessity of its strict implementation, the Kremlin said in a statement.
"The presidents of Russia and France called for preserving the Plan and its full implementation," the Kremlin said. The sides also discussed other vital issues of the international and bilateral agenda.
The deal on Iran’s nuclear program, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was reached between Iran and six international mediators (Russia, the UK, China, the US, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015. In January 2016, the parties to the deal announced the launch of its implementation. Under the deal, Iran undertook efforts to curb its nuclear activities and place them under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in exchange for lifting the nuclear related sanctions.
Meanwhile, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said Tehran will not accept any limitation on its nuclear program beyond commitments undertaken as per the nuclear deal with the P5+1 group of countries. Rouhani made the remarks in a phone call with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, on Sunday.
US President Donald Trump has claimed on numerous occasions that the Iran nuclear deal is flawed arguing that it did not prevent the creation of nuclear weapons by Iran but only postponed it. In January 2018, Trump asked the US Congress and European Union allies to address "flaws" in the agreement. The United States is expected to announce whether it will extend US sanction waivers for Iran on May 12.
Other parties to the agreement have all criticized Trump’s hostile views, saying the deal is sound and has proven to be functioning.
Earlier on Sunday, the leaders of Britain, France and Germany reaffirmed their support for the landmark nuclear deal with Iran.
