Baghdad Commits to Enforcing its Security Agreement with Tehran

ALWAGHT- The National Security Advisor of Iraq reaffirmed Baghdad’s determination to carry out all terms of the security accord with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

A high-level Iraqi delegation led by National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji met with Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, in Tehran to discuss bilateral security cooperation. Major General Mousavi highlighted the deep brotherhood between the Iranian and Iraqi peoples, noting that this unity concerns the United States and its allies. He stressed the importance of fully implementing the existing security agreement between the two nations.

Qasim al-Araji echoed Mousavi’s sentiments, emphasizing the enduring and unbreakable ties between Iran and Iraq. Referring to the recent 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, he praised the Iranian nation’s unity in the face of loss and aggression, describing it as a testament to their strength and resilience. Al-Araji reiterated Iraq’s full commitment to enforcing the terms of the bilateral security pact.

Al-Araji further underscored the need for closer military, political, and economic cooperation to promote regional stability. He affirmed that neither Iraq nor the Kurdistan Regional Government would allow their territory to be used for hostile acts against neighboring countries, particularly Iran. The Kurdistan Region’s Interior Minister also confirmed efforts to disarm anti-Iran groups in northern Iraq. During his visit, al-Araji held additional meetings with senior Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
