US Seeks to Undermine OPCW Authority: Russia

Alwaght- Russia accused the US of undermining the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) that was set to investigate the alleged chemical attack in Syria’s Douma city the same day, the US, the UK and France launched a missile attack on Syria.

Russia’s state-run news agency Sputnik cited the Russian embassy in the Netherlands as saying on Monday "The US tries to undermine the credibility the Fact-finding mission in Syria even before it arrives at Douma. Russia confirms its commitment to ensure [safety] and security of the mission and will not interfere in its work".

The OPCW will hold a special session on Monday, discussing the recent escalation of the situation in Syria.

The US and its allies had been threatening Damascus with military action since April 7, when a suspected chemical attack on the Syrian town of Douma, Eastern Ghouta, reportedly killed 60 people and injured hundreds more.

US President Donald Trump this weekend ordered American forces to launch missile strikes in Syria. on Saturday morning, the armed forces of the US, Britain and France launched a barrage of cruise missiles on three different targets in Syria, saying it was the right thing to do to deter the further use of chemical weapons.

The attack came the same day that the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) mission was set to start the probe into the alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, which the West had immediately blamed on Damascus.

Following the accusations, the Syrian government has strongly denied being behind the alleged attack and stated that the missile strike was "brutal aggression."

Russia's Putin predicts global 'chaos' if West hits Syria again

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Sunday that further Western attacks on Syria would bring chaos to world affairs, as Washington prepared to increase pressure on Russia with new economic sanctions.

In a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, Putin and Rouhani agreed that the Western strikes had damaged the chances of achieving a political resolution in the seven-year Syria conflict, according to a Kremlin statement.

“Vladimir Putin, in particular, stressed that if such actions committed in violation of the U.N. Charter continue, then it will inevitably lead to chaos in international relations,” the Kremlin statement said.
