Alwaght-At least one person has been killed in a security crackdown in Egypt amid fresh protests against President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his military-backed government.
This comes after thousands of supporters of toppled President Mohamed Morsi staged massive rallies in the capital Cairo and several other major cities on Friday.
Large crowds of protesters, including peace activists, flooded the streets to voice their outrage against the recent killing of protesters by the security forces.
The angry demonstrators chanted slogans against the military, calling for the overthrow of Sisi’s government.
On Sunday, at least 20 people, mostly demonstrators, were killed when protesters marking the fourth anniversary of Egypt’s 2011 revolution clashed with security forces.
Supporters of Morsi have staged numerous rallies since his ouster. They have been subjected to a heavy-handed crackdown by the Egyptian military-backed government.
The 2011 revolution, which began on January 25, led to the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak. In an election after Mubarak’s fall, Muslim Brotherhood-backed Morsi was elected president but was later ousted in a military coup led by the former military ruler and the current president, Sisi, in July 2013.
The Egyptian government has been cracking down on any opposition since Morsi was ousted, and Sisi is accused of leading the suppression of Morsi's supporters, as hundreds of them have been killed in clashes with Egyptian security forces over the past year.
The UN Human Rights Council has repeatedly expressed concern over the Egyptian security forces’ crackdown and the killing of anti-government protesters.
