ALWAGHT- The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson congratulated Chile on the successful conduct of its presidential election and affirmed Tehran’s willingness to enhance bilateral relations with the incoming Chilean government based on mutual respect and common interests.
In a post on X on Monday, Esmaeil Baghaei congratulated Chile on its presidential election, expressing hope for closer bilateral ties rooted in mutual respect and shared interests. He also wished the incoming government success.
Right-wing candidate Jose Antonio Kast secured a decisive victory in the runoff, winning 58 percent of the vote over leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who garnered 42 percent.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s message reflects Tehran’s standard diplomatic practice of acknowledging electoral processes abroad while signaling openness to continued or expanded engagement with incoming administrations. Such statements are typically framed around principles of mutual respect, non-interference, and shared interests, which Iran frequently emphasizes in its relations with countries outside its immediate region.
Iran and Chile have historically maintained cordial but limited ties, primarily focused on diplomacy, trade, and multilateral cooperation. While bilateral economic engagement has been modest, both countries have interacted within international forums and have periodically explored opportunities for broader cooperation, particularly in areas such as agriculture, industry, and South–South relations.
The change in Chile’s political leadership could influence the trajectory of bilateral relations, depending on the new government’s foreign policy priorities and alignment with regional and global partners. Iran’s public outreach at this early stage suggests an interest in keeping diplomatic channels open and positioning itself for potential engagement as Chile’s new administration defines its international agenda.
