Iran Open to Russia–China Mediation to Renew IAEA Cooperation

Iran Open to Russia–China Mediation to Renew IAEA Cooperation

ALWAGHT- A senior official says Iran is ready to consider mediation initiatives by Russia and China aimed at restoring its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Iran’s senior foreign policy official Kamal Kharrazi said Tehran is open to considering a Russia-China mediation plan to revive cooperation with the IAEA, noting that Iran would review any proposed roadmap. His remarks came after Russia revealed that Iran, Russia, and China held a trilateral dialogue on November 5, followed by phone consultations between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Russia’s Sergey Lavrov on nuclear and IAEA-related developments.

Iran halted its cooperation with the IAEA after US attacks on its nuclear facilities in June—strikes carried out amid Israeli aggression—prompting parliament to unanimously order a complete suspension of engagement. Tehran has criticized IAEA chief Rafael Grossi for failing to safeguard Iran’s sites, arguing his actions contributed to the attacks. Although Iran and Grossi later reached an agreement in Cairo on resuming cooperation, implementation was suspended after the E3 triggered the snapback mechanism.

Despite these setbacks, Iran says it remains open to reviewing new frameworks for engagement with the IAEA. Ultimately, any decision on the nature and extent of future cooperation will be determined by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
