ALWAGHT- According to UNIFIL, Israeli drones dropped four grenades near peacekeepers clearing obstructed roads, marking ‘one of the most serious attacks’ on UN personnel since the 2024 Lebanon-Israel ceasefire agreement.
UNIFIL reported that Israeli drones dropped grenades near its peacekeepers during road clearance operations southeast of Marwahin, calling it “one of the most serious attacks” on its personnel since the November 2024 ceasefire. One grenade landed within 20 meters of UN personnel, and three more within about 100 meters. The UN force emphasized that endangering peacekeepers and interfering with their duties violates Resolution 1701 and international law.
The UNIFIL mission, established to oversee Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon and later expanded after the 2006 war, has faced increasing criticism from the US and Israel for not countering Hezbollah. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council recently voted to end UNIFIL by the end of next year after nearly five decades, under pressure from Washington and Tel Aviv. The attack occurs amid mounting international pressure on Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah.
Lebanese officials have condemned Israel’s continued occupation of positions in southern Lebanon, warning it breaches the ceasefire. While Prime Minister Nawaf Salam supports UNIFIL’s extension, he stresses Israel must withdraw from occupied territory. Critics argue disarming Hezbollah is unrealistic as long as Israeli troops remain in southern Lebanon, with many viewing Hezbollah as the only credible force capable of deterring Israeli aggression.
