ALWAGHT- Iran’s Parliament has cautioned that it will deliver a firm and reciprocal response should the European troika move ahead with reactivating the snapback mechanism of sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
Iran’s Parliament held a closed session to discuss the European troika’s (Germany, France, and Britain) decision to trigger the JCPOA snapback mechanism, which would reinstate pre-2015 sanctions against Tehran. Lawmakers reviewed the potential economic and political consequences of the move, with officials stressing that Iran’s response would be firm, reciprocal, and aimed at deterring further hostile actions.
Parliamentary leaders, including Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, condemned the E3’s decision as unlawful, arguing that the European states had failed to honor their own JCPOA commitments and therefore had no legal right to activate the snapback clause. They vowed that a unified and decisive Iranian response would soon be announced, coordinated through the Parliament, government, and Supreme National Security Council.
Tehran also sent a letter to the UN Security Council urging members to reject what it called “unjustified political manipulations” and to defend international law. Meanwhile, Russia and China denounced the E3’s move, warning of its repercussions, while Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that Tehran will take appropriate countermeasures. The dispute follows years of tensions after the US withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, reinstated sanctions, and pursued its “maximum pressure” campaign, while Europe failed to deliver on its promises to preserve the deal.
