ALWAGHT- The Iranian UN envoy in Geneva condemned Washington’s aggressive stance toward Venezuela, describing it as contrary to international law and the UN Charter.
At the UN Conference on Disarmament on Wednesday, Iranian envoy Ali Bahreini voiced strong concerns about recent US actions in Latin America and the Caribbean. He warned that Washington’s hostile policies toward Venezuela, including years of sanctions, coercive measures, and attempts to overthrow its government, posed a serious threat to international peace and security.
Bahreini highlighted the deployment of a US naval fleet and nuclear submarine in the Caribbean as an open challenge to Venezuela’s political independence and territorial integrity. He described these moves as violations of fundamental principles of international law, including Articles 2(3), 2(4), and 2(7) of the UN Charter, which govern the peaceful settlement of disputes, prohibition of force, and non-interference in state affairs.
He further criticized the US for undermining disarmament and non-proliferation efforts by threatening a non-nuclear state with nuclear capabilities. Bahreini noted that these actions also breach the Treaty of Tlatelolco, which establishes a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Latin America and the Caribbean, and cited the June attack on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities as additional evidence of Washington’s disregard for diplomacy and international law.
