Palestinian Anger as Britain Plans Embassy Move to Al-Quds

Friday 23 September 2022
Palestinian Anger as Britain Plans Embassy Move to Al-Quds

Alwaght- Palestinians on Thursday expressed anger over plans by the British Prime Minister Liz Truss to relocate her country’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Al-Quds (Jerusalem).

Some Palestinians described the move as “a new Balfour Declaration” and said it proves Britain’s bias in favor of the Israeli government.

Hamas condemned the move and said that by doing so London would "show its true colors."

A Palestinian Authority official warned that such “dangerous” moves would have a negative impact on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"If Britain wants to play any role in the region, it must avoid taking any decision that only causes harm and aggravates tensions,”  the Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post cited the Sabri Saidam.

Jordan also warned about such move.

Truss said on Thursday she is considering relocating the British embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Al-Quds  in a controversial move that would break with decades of the British foreign policy.

In a meeting on the sidelines of the UN general assembly in New York, Truss told Israeli caretaker leader, Yair Lapid, about a “review of the current location” of the building, Downing Street said in a statement.

The move, if taken, follows in footsteps of the former American President Donald Trump who moved embassy to the holy Muslim city in 2018.

The Israelis insist that Al-Quds is the capital of the so-called Jewish state, but Palestinians insist that it is their capital.
