Alwaght- Alaska and Hawaii were occupied by the US more than hundred years ago and were then made states of the so-called United States of America. But now those two stars on the American flag want to be released free.
Alaska and Hawaii demand independence and have already created the Alaska-Hawaii alliance for self-determination.
The leaders of this alliance intend to raise a question about independence of those states on May 11 when the UN Council for Human Rights will conduct a regular review of rights and freedoms in the US.
“In 1959 Alaska and Hawaii were seized by the US as a result of deception and deliberate violation of the UN mandate and principles, and self-determination process. UN can correct this error”, - Alliance said in a special statement.
At the same time, the organization notes that the sale of Alaska by Russia to the US in 1867 did not mean that the sovereignty of Alaska was also transferred to the US, while invasion of the US to Hawaii in 1893 violated bilateral agreements and the international law. The Alliance plans to gain independence from US by means of peaceful process through the UN mechanisms.
Hawaiian and Alaskan people are not satisfied with US conduct on their lands. Leon Siu, a representative of Hawaii, said that their culture is being suppressed, and also added, “However, the US actions are directed not only against our culture but against the peace on the planet, because the military base Pearl Harbor is located at Hawaii. During military exercise they pollute our water and soil. People are ailing. It’s an abuse of our land and people. We don’t want to be a part of this military machine”.
Also, Ronald Barnes, a representative of Alaska, expressed his and his people’s distress by saying, “They take our land and produce mineral resources in huge quantities damaging the environment”.
“We believe that Russians can help us. In 2017 it will be 150 years since Alaska was sold to the U.S. If we could work with Russians and find out the truth about what really happened in our history and refuse distorted conceptions about Alaska and our people, it would be a good way to correct the situation”, Barnes says.
In his opinion, Alaska could become a neutral state located between Russia and the West.
The indigenous peoples of Alaska and Hawaii appealed to the international community to ensure their right to self-determination in connection with the “illegal annexation” and “occupation” of the US.
The record demonstrates that Alaska and Hawaii “in 1959 were consumed by the United States through misrepresentation and conscious infringement of the order and standards of the United Nations, and the methodology of self-determination.”
A human rights group speaking in the name of indigenous populations of Alaska and Hawaii seek UN intervention to organize self-determination referenda in the US states, saying Washington has illegally occupied it since 1959.
Both territories were listed in 1946 as Non Self-Governing Territories under article 73 of the UN Charter. The status theoretically subjected Alaska and Hawaii to decolonization. In both referenda were held over whether they would become fully-fledged states of the USA, which both did in 1959.
Critics of the transition, including the Alaska-Hawaii Alliance for Self-Determination, accuse the US federal government of failing to hold the ballots properly, which they say should have involved offering and explaining to the people the option for becoming an independent state rather than part of the US.
The group wants the UN to pressure the US over what they call a violation of UN charter and international law. It accuses Washington of mistreating indigenous peoples of Alaska and Hawaii living under what it calls American ‘occupation’.
It seems that the US is losing the brightest stars of its flag, and the word “United States” seems too good to be true.
