Iran and Russia: an Alliance under the Shadow of Distrust

Iran and Russia: an Alliance under the Shadow of Distrust

Alwaght- Russia Delivery of S-300 defense system to Iran has been followed by some different reactions. Regarding political conditions of the West Asia, relations between Iran and Russia, Russia condition in the region, Lausanne declaration on Iran nuclear program and so on, a review of Russia-Iran relations seems necessary.

These relations are discussable in various political, economic and security dimensions. There have been historically three main approaches on Russia-Iran relations:

First, due to their conflicts with the U.S hegemony as well as apposition towards the West penetration in their neighborhoods, Iran and Russia are apt to be allied strategically. In addition, they are trying to be known as the super power in the region. All of the abovementioned factors urge Russia and Iran to corporate as strategic allies.

Second, because of some different negative historical background, two countries cannot have mutual cooperation. During history, Iranians have received a lot of blows from Russia including treaties of Torkamanchai and Golestan. In addition, Russians believe that Iranians tend more towards the Western Bloc as they did during the Cold War; hence, these negative approaches generally prevent the two countries from being allied.

Finally, the countries can enjoy cooperation and completion simultaneously. It means that, on one hand, they have a lot of common fields especially in Central Asia, Caucasus and the West Asia on which they can have fairly common positions and cooperation. On the other hand, there are some conflicts between them paving the way for competitions including export of energy, especially gas, to European countries. It seems that the last approach is more logical and realistic.
