Alwaght-A terrorist wearing suicide belt targeted Shiite Muslim worshippers at a Baghdad mosque after Friday prayers, killing at least nine people, security and medical officials said.
The attack in southwest Baghdad also wounded at least 25 people during the attack at the Radwaniyah area, southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. Security sources said a bomber detonated his explosive vest at the Imam Ali AS mosque after immediately Friday Prayers.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but the ISIS Takfiri terrorist group carries out frequent suicide bombings targeting Shiite Mosques in the region, whom it considers heretics.
ISIS terrorists overran swathes of territory north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but Iraqi forces backed local militias have since regained significant ground.
The group still controls a large part of the country's west, and are able to carry out frequent bombings in government-held areas.
The attack comes after weeks of political turmoil that has been a setback for Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
The premier has sought to replace the current cabinet of party-affiliated ministers with a government of so-called technocrats, but has faced major opposition from powerful parties that rely on control of ministries for patronage and funds.
According to the UN mission, the number of civilian fatalities stood at 575. Violence also claimed the lives of 544 members of the Iraqi security forces.
