Araghchi Calls on World to Hold US Accountable for ‘War Crimes’ at UNGA

ALWAGHT- Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi cautioned that failing to respond to recent US and Israeli actions against Iran could bring severe repercussions for the world.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that global inaction over recent US and Israeli "war crimes" against Iran could have catastrophic consequences. He made the remarks in a Tuesday meeting with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in New York, where he was attending the 2026 UN General Assembly. Araghchi pointed to February 28 attacks on a school in Minab and a sports hall in Lamerd, both in southern Iran, which killed nearly 200 people, many of them children.

Araghchi said the world has not done enough to condemn these crimes and stressed that impunity carries wide-ranging consequences. He called on all countries to uphold the UN Charter and international law, particularly the prohibition on the use of force, and urged governments to hold the US accountable for its actions, including repeated violations of indirect agreements with Iran. He added that Iran is determined to defend itself against US "interventionist" actions, including a naval blockade and economic war.

In a separate meeting with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Araghchi called Italy's hosting of US military bases and any cooperation in aggression against Iran "extremely dangerous" and tantamount to complicity. He also denounced European "double standards" on human rights, saying countries silent on Israeli violations and indifferent to attacks on Iranians have no standing to lecture others. Speaking with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, he accused the bloc of appeasing US "bullying" rather than upholding the principles it claims to defend.

Araghchi also met Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov. With Ryzhenkov, he discussed expanding economic and trade ties, described Iran-Belarus relations as "excellent and growing," and called for joint resistance to Western unilateral sanctions. The Belarusian minister reaffirmed Minsk's commitment to its "brotherly and strategic" relationship with Tehran.
