Alwaght- The presidents of Iran and Russia have discussed the situation in Syria reiterating cooperation to promote regional stability and the war on terrorism.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday held a phone conversation with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. During the call, Putin once again offered congratulations to Rouhani on his landslide reelection victory.
"During the discussion of the situation in Syria the parties stressed importance of developing joint efforts to favor the political-diplomatic settlement of the conflict in that country, including in the framework of the Astana process and by means of implementing the Memorandum on de-escalation zones," the Kremlin Press Service said in a statement.
Rouhani said Iran-Russia cooperation would help promote regional peace and stability and contribute to the fight against terrorism, particularly in Syria. "The expansion of such cooperation in Syria is very important and we welcome the continuation of trilateral cooperation among Iran, Russia and Syria and are resolute to go on with it," the Iranian president pointed out.
The parties confirmed the aspirations for development of the multifaceted bilateral cooperation in line with the agreements achieved during the Iranian president’s visit to Russia in March.
"They paid special attention to trade and economic cooperation, including to implementation of major joint projects in the sectors of oil and gas and peace use of nuclear power," a Kremlin statement said, according to TASS.
During the phone conversation, the Iranian president said that Tehran welcomes the expansion of cooperation with its neighboring countries, including Russia, adding, "Iran is ready to bolster bilateral and regional cooperation with Russia with more determination and we will witness more close cooperation between the two countries in the future."
The Iranian president further said the Islamic Republic would remain committed to its obligations under the historic nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as long as the other side also fulfills its commitments.
