Gunfire, Explosion at Military Hospital in Kabul, Near US Embassy

Alwaght- Gunmen have entered a military hospital close to the US Embassy in the Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday and a gun battle is under way, the Afghan defense ministry says.

"The Sardar Daud Khan hospital has been attacked," said a spokesperson.

Security forces were surrounding the 400-bed Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan hospital, the largest military hospital in Kabul, where an explosion was earlier reported.

Reuters cited a a worker at the hospital as saying he saw one gunmen, dressed in a white doctor's coat, take out a concealed AK-47 and open fire, killing at least one patient and one hospital worker, but he had also heard firing from several other points.

Tolo News television quoted a doctor working in the hospital who said a blast was detonated at the hospital, after which gunmen had opened fire.

The area was cordoned off by security forces.

The attack comes just a week after sixteen people were killed in dual Taliban suicide attacks. That attack was claimed by Taliban insurgents.

They were the latest in a string of attacks to challenge the Afghan authorities after the resurgent militant group started its spring offensive early.
