Rise of Extremism in Malaysia: Causes and Consequences

Rise of Extremism in Malaysia: Causes and Consequences

Alwaght-Reports of Malaysian intelligence agencies about the spread of extremism in Malaysia have resulted in concerns among people and king of this country, Abdel Halim Moazzam Shah. The plight traces back to the previous policies of Malaysian government. Previous situation in Malaysia and influence of extremist views over the parties and politicians of this country during the past years has paved the way for the spread of extremism in Malaysian society. Citizens' will to join ISIS terrorist group is one of the consequences Malaysian officials' wrong policies. Extremism in Malaysia esteems from previous policies of this country and cooperation with countries that supports extremism and have dispatched many missionaries to Malaysia over these years or have established schools and universities in this South-East Asian country .

In other words, Malaysian government's support for missionaries of Saudi Arabia and other extremism exporting countries over the past years and unprecedented presence of Wahhabis in Malaysian mosques in Ramadan have been effective in increasing extremism there. The presence of a large number of Malaysian students in Saudi Arabian universities to learn religious teachings as well as establishing Saudi Arabian al-Madineh University in Shah Alam and training some boards of Malaysian judges in judicial centers of Saudi Arabia are examples of Malaysian leader's wrong policies .

Calling ISIS as a brave group by Malaysian prime minister and president of Malaysia’s al-Mmadineh University call on female students to join sexual jihad in Syria and Iraq have been mistakes that have led to youths' joining ISIS terrorist group in Syria and Iraq. Saudi Arabian students' activities in Facebook and Twitter to promote Wahhabism in Malaysia plays an important role in waging a psychological war against the opponents by Al-Nusra Front and ISIL  .

On the other hand,  books that promote ideology of ISIS terrorist group, Salafism and extremism are sold in some bookstores of Malaysia. In addition, selling flags, hats and clothes with the symbols of ISIS and Taliban by some stores in Malaysia has led to authorities’ concern over spill over of terrorist activities in Malaysia. Forming a network by militant and terrorist groups of Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines by using social networks has sounded the alarm for this area. Prior to this, a Malay unit called “Katibah Nusantara Lid Daulah Islamiyyah” or “Malay archipelago unit for the Islamic State” had been formed in ISIS terrorist group .

It’s not unexpected that failure of ISIS and extremists in Syria and Iraq would result in creation of a new front in East Asia in which case the entire region will be involved in extremist violence. The continuation of ISS conflicts in the West Asia, on the one hand can pave the ground for movement of extremists in East Asia in near future and on the other hand can be a good opportunity for statesmen to embark on a serious battle against extremist movements in the region through changing their strategy towards extremist policies of Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states and organizations supporting ISIS and Al-Nusra Front. Accordingly, if the statesmen cannot draw the roadmap for fighting against violence, East Asia will be the next realm of extremists and serious challenges among different peoples and ideologies .
