ALWAGHT- According to a knowledgeable source, an IAEA delegation will travel to Tehran next week to engage in talks regarding the enforcement of the parliament’s law halting cooperation with the agency.
Consultations between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will focus solely on political matters, with no inspectors participating in the upcoming delegation. This marks the beginning of a new phase in their relationship following Iran’s recent parliamentary legislation suspending cooperation with the agency, a response to Israeli and US attacks on Iranian nuclear sites and the assassination of nuclear scientists.
Despite the suspension, Iran remains a party to the IAEA safeguards agreements and is considering how to proceed with its cooperation under the new law. Iranian officials are working to establish a new framework for engagement with the UN nuclear watchdog, reflecting a complex balancing act between legal obligations and political pressures.
In the coming weeks, an IAEA official is expected to visit Iran to address technical issues, marking the first such visit since the recent conflict with Israel and the US. This visit highlights a diplomatic shift as both sides explore ways to continue dialogue, despite Iran’s stated refusal to allow access to its nuclear facilities.
