Alwaght- Syrian President Bashar Assad blamed US for Saturday’s airstrikes on Syrian troops in the country’s east, saying the attacks that lasted for “an hour” were “definitely intentional”.
Speaking to Associate Press, Syrian President also blamed Washington for the collapse of a cease-fire deal brokered with Russia.
The US-led coalition forces attacked a strategic position in the eastern city of Deir Ezzor in Syria held by the national army and killed 62 soldiers on Saturday.
The attack came just when the Syrian National army had fully liberated the already ISIS-held Thardeh Mountains near one of its bases in the region, suggesting that the US "Is defending ISIS".
The US warplanes dropped phosphorous bomb on the Syrian forces that killed the soldiers immediately. After the attack ISIS forces were able to recapture the strategic mountain.
Immediately after the US attack, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared the attack proved US support for the ISIS.
"After today's attack on the Syrian army, we come to the terrible conclusion that the White House is defending ISIS,” a spokesman of Russian ministry said on Sunday.
Rejecting any prior coordination with the Russian army, Konashenkov of Russia's Defense Ministry said “If the airstrike was caused by the wrong coordinates of targets than it’s a direct consequence of the stubborn unwillingness of the American side to coordinate with Russia in its actions against terrorist groups in Syria”.
"Immediately after the airstrike by coalition planes, Islamic State militants launched their offensive. Fierce fighting with the terrorists is currently underway in the area of the airport where for a long a time humanitarian aid for civilians was parachuted,” Konashenkov continued.
DEBKAfile site also claimed the US army deliberately disobeyed their president in attacking the Syrian army in Deir Ezzor to weaken the US-Russia brokered truce, cited its sources in US army as saying.
The website claimed the US army is concerned about exposing its intelligence gathering technics and sources to the Russian army and eventually to the Syrian government.
