ALWAGHT- President Donald Trump has reportedly urged Ukraine’s Zelensky to refrain from targeting Moscow, even as he pledged to deliver US long-range missiles capable of reaching the city.
Reports suggest that during a recent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump asked provocative questions about Ukraine’s capability to strike Moscow and St. Petersburg. Zelensky reportedly confirmed Ukraine could carry out such attacks if provided with the necessary weapons. However, Trump later clarified that he had warned Zelensky against targeting Moscow, asserting that such actions would undermine efforts to end the conflict.
Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, defended the conversation, stating it was a matter of inquiry rather than encouragement of escalation. Despite the controversy, Trump has pledged to provide Ukraine with advanced American weapons, including JASSM cruise missiles and Patriot air defense systems — both capable of striking targets hundreds of miles away, including Russian territory.
Military analysts have pointed out the strategic implications of such a weapons transfer, noting the psychological impact on Moscow and the potential to disrupt Russian missile and drone operations. While the stated aim is to reduce civilian casualties, critics warn that the delivery of long-range US weaponry could escalate tensions and prolong the war. Trump has also expressed dissatisfaction with Russia and threatened severe economic measures if President Putin refuses to engage in peace talks.
