Russia Voices Concern Over US Actions against Syria’s Territorial Integrity

Alwaght- Russia’s Special Presidential Envoy to Syria Aleksandr Lavrentiev said on Saturday the US should leave the war-torn Syria as it lacks the approval of the Syrian government.

Russia Today cited the Russian diplomat as saying “Our position is absolutely clear – American troops should not stay in the territory of a sovereign state without the permission of its government”.

The US military presence can harm the peace efforts in the country, namely the upcoming Syrian National Dialogue Congress which will be held in Sochi on January 29-30, Lavrentiev emphasized.

The Russian diplomat's remarks came in response to announcement of US Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson that American troops will remain in Syria long after their alleged fight against terrorists.

Staying in Syria, Tillerson claimed, will help ensure that the Trump administration does not repeat what he described as the mistakes of former President Barack Obama, who withdrew troops from Iraq before the extremist threat was doused and failed to stabilize Libya after NATO airstrikes that led to the overthrow of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

According to NY Times, There are roughly 2,000 American troops in Syria.
