Alwaght-Guiding the public opinion is considered one of the most important issues in the state policies, particularly in internal affairs aspect i.e., the state's policy towards its people. In addition, media guidance is of great importance with regard to foreign affairs, where it has a prominent influence on the foreign state policies. Perhaps, one of the issues that very much talked about is people's trust in the media. However, today some people's trust in their media is dramatically declined, particularly the westerns.
One of the most jeopardizing issues that might result in public opinion's distrust in honesty and accuracy of the media is the notion that the media are providing them with false information. This reason might trigger the Western societies, particularly the Americans, to stop believing in their media. Moreover, they have sought for other media sources to get access to alternative news. This reflects the deteriorating ability of the Western governments to proceed with their policies of media blackout, especially about the issues of the West Asia.
Jon Snow, a British journalist and television presenter who has interviewed major political figures and leaders, talked to The Independent newspaper about the sensitivity of media coverage in the West Asia and the lack of understanding and comprehension of the political state by the Western media. Jon Snow has also discussed how the Western media is broadcasting news that lack objectivity and accuracy.
The American Media as a case study
These claims can be proven, when the American society is taken as a sample. A study published in Harvard Politics and Journalism Journal, analyzing the American citizen trust in the credibility of the Western media. The study found that the American society's trust in the Western media has declined clearly over the recent years. It has also shown that more than sixty percent of the American people think that the media exaggerates on the negative aspects more than enough.
The study revealed the most important reasons for the lack of credibility in Western media, among which is the "lack of objectivity", concerning the presentation and analysis of the issues. The Study puts forth consecutive attacks against the virtues and principles of Islam or tarnishing of the image of the Muslim community living in the US as examples of media's lack of objectivity. Therefore, the majority of the American people who used to trust the Western media have turned into a minority during the past ten years.
The study has been conducted focusing on the American media problems regarding their states' foreign affairs. It concluded that western media problems stems from the Zionist lobby's control over the majority of the American media, who are constantly trying to expose American citizen to false information and portray Muslims as bogyman. Various media, figures and institutes propagate same content in different forms to pertain that there is no link between them giving the recipient the false sense that it’s a genuine media message.
Another reason presented by the study that explains disparity in forms is that the Zionist lobby may have more than one position towards the same issue. The disparity in opinions within the Zionist mainstream in the US may have an influence over some of the media positions. However, us mainstream media altogether aim to serve the same group and does not necessarily reflect the various American public opinions.
Anthony Lewis, an author sympathetic with the Zionist thought and an editor in The New York Times newspaper, is known for his sharp criticism of the Israeli regime. He says, "If you love Zionism, you would want it to be always right." Therefore, media messages may appear diverse in forms, but they will not be work against the interests of the Zionist lobby, in a way or another. Unfortunately, the American citizens are not aware of this bitter reality.
