ALWAGHT- Iran has urged Syrian interim authorities to take firm action against the mass killings of civilians in Latakia and Tartus, calling for immediate steps to end the violence, safeguard civilians, and guarantee unrestricted humanitarian aid access.
Iran’s UN representative, Amir Saeid Iravani, addressed the Security Council, rejecting US accusations about Iran’s role in Syria. He emphasized that Iran seeks stability in the region and does not engage in destabilizing activities. He condemned recent violence in Latakia and Tartus, urging Syrian interim authorities to protect civilians, prevent forced displacement, and ensure unrestricted humanitarian aid. Iran welcomed the Security Council’s condemnation of the attacks and called for an independent investigation and accountability for the perpetrators.
Iravani also stressed the need for coordinated counterterrorism efforts, warning about the threat of foreign fighters in Syria. He condemned Israeli airstrikes as violations of international law and a source of regional instability, calling for an end to Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights. Additionally, he highlighted Syria’s economic struggles and criticized US and EU sanctions for hindering reconstruction efforts, calling for their complete removal to facilitate recovery and refugee return.
Reaffirming Iran’s support for Syria’s sovereignty, Iravani backed a Syrian-led political process under UN guidance, in line with Resolution 2254. He welcomed Syria’s reintegration into the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and dismissed US allegations as deceptive, accusing Washington of violating Syria’s sovereignty under the pretext of counterterrorism. He concluded by stating that Iran remains committed to stability and does not engage in regional destabilization.
