ALWAGHT- Iran has strongly denounced US President Donald Trump's threat of military action against the country, calling it deeply alarming and irresponsible.
Iran’s permanent ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, condemned former US President Donald Trump's threats against Iran in a letter to the UN chief and Security Council president. Iravani labeled Trump’s statements as reckless and inflammatory, arguing that they violate international law and the UN Charter, specifically Article 2(4), which prohibits threats or the use of force against sovereign states. Trump, in recent interviews, suggested he preferred a deal with Iran over military action but also repeatedly implied the possibility of bombing the country.
Iravani further criticized Trump's "maximum pressure" policy, describing it as a blatant violation of international law. He pointed out that Trump's National Security Presidential Memorandum (NSPM) of February 2025 escalates hostility against Iran through unilateral coercive measures. The Iranian envoy urged the UN Security Council to take a firm stance against Trump’s rhetoric, warning that allowing such threats to go unchecked sets a dangerous precedent. He emphasized that Iran rejects and condemns these threats and expects the Security Council to unequivocally oppose them.
Iranian officials also responded to Trump’s broader sanctions and oil export restrictions, which were re-imposed after the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) in 2018. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian criticized Trump's contradictory stance, noting that while he talks about diplomacy, he simultaneously intensifies economic pressure on Iran. Pezeshkian reaffirmed that Iran does not seek war but will not surrender to foreign pressure. Meanwhile, Iravani warned that any act of aggression against Iran would have severe consequences, for which the US would bear full responsibility.
