Kerry Urges Congress Not to Reject Iran Nuclear Deal

Kerry Urges Congress Not to Reject Iran Nuclear Deal

Alwaght - John Kerry, US Secretary of State warned the Congress not to reject the deal concluded in the nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

"I really don't believe that people will turn their backs on an agreement which has such extraordinary steps in it with respect to Iran's program as well as access and verification," said Kerry in Vienna on Tuesday after the announcement of the conclusion of talks.

The text of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was finalized earlier on Tuesday. According to the text, Iran will be recognized by the United Nations as a nuclear power and will continue its uranium enrichment program.

Also, sanctions imposed by the US, European Union, and United Nations would be lifted at once under a mutually agreed framework and through a new UN resolution.

Iran, for its part, has agreed on some curbs on its nuclear program.

The US Congress now has 60 days to review the text and vote to either approve or disapprove of the agreement.

“We have worked very hard to get here. A resolution to this type of challenge never comes easily, not when the stakes are so high. Not when the issues are so technical, and not when every decision made affects the regional and global security so directly,” Kerry stated.

Kerry also stated that the US and the rest of the P5+1 - the UK, France, Russia, China and Germany- “were determined o get this done.”

President Barack Obama, from his side, also said, while addressing the American people from the White House, that he would veto any legislation from US lawmakers that "prevents the successful implementation of the deal."
