Alwaght- Iran delivers hundreds of tons of fruit and vegetables to Qatar on a daily basis as the country endures a blockade by Saudi Arabia and some Persian Gulf nations.
According to Mohammad Mehdi Bonchari, the director of ports of Iran's Bushehr province, Iran is exporting over 1,100 tonnes of fresh fruits and vegetables from its southern ports to Qatar every day.
Bonchari added that the shipments were made from Dayyer, Bolkheir and Genaveh ports.
He added that Bushehr had historic trade ties with Qatar, adding that the same ties were being used to export food to the Persian Gulf state which is caught in a diplomatic dispute with its neighbors which started in early June.
Iran opened a food corridor with Qatar immediately after the start of the county’s diplomatic crisis.
The Iranian national carrier Iran Air announced on June 11 that it had sent planeloads of fruits and vegetables to Qatar for several days each weighing around 100 tonnes.
Last week, Abbas Maroufan, the deputy for domestic trade at the Iranian Government Trading Corporation, told the media that Iran could satisfy the food demands of “ten countries like Qatar.”
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Egypt and other countries cut diplomatic ties and transportation links with Qatar early in June.
They accuse Doha of supporting terrorism and meddling in the internal affairs of other nations in the region and having close ties with neighboring Iran. Doha has dismissed claims of supporting terrorism.
The blockade led to fears of food shortages in a country that mainly depends on imports and saw people storming shops to secure supplies. The blockade was imposed in the midst of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, making the situation more acute for Qataris.
