ALWAGHT- Donald Trump, President of the US, has stated that Canada is required to contribute $61 billion to the 'Golden Dome' missile initiative, adding that the cost would be eliminated if Canada became a US state.
Shortly after returning to the White House in January, President Trump revealed his plan for a missile defense system called "Golden Dome," claiming it could intercept missiles launched from anywhere, including space. Last week, he stated that Canada was interested in joining the program but would need to pay $61 billion unless it became the United States’ 51st state, in which case the cost would be waived.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed ongoing discussions with the Trump administration about the Golden Dome, though he stressed it was only one of several defense partnership options under consideration. Carney declined to disclose any potential Canadian financial commitments. Meanwhile, King Charles delivered a throne speech reaffirming Canada’s sovereignty in response to Trump’s annexation rhetoric, emphasizing national unity and independence.
Tensions between the US and Canada have increased during Trump’s second term, marked by new tariffs on Canadian goods and repeated suggestions of annexation. Although initially dismissed as a joke, many now believe Trump may seriously consider making Canada a US state. However, Carney has firmly rejected this notion, insisting Canada will never join the US but is open to building strong partnerships.
