Iran Criticizes EU3’s ‘Irresponsible’ Approach to Nuclear Issues

ALWAGHT- Iran’s foreign minister criticized the European troika’s irresponsible handling of Iran’s nuclear issue, emphasizing that negotiations must be grounded in respect for Iran’s legal rights and legitimate interests rather than unilateral pressure.

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, spoke with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on Friday in a telephone call during which he criticized the approach adopted by the UK, France, and Germany regarding Iran’s nuclear file. He emphasized that Iran has never opposed negotiations or dialogue when these are based on respect for the country’s legal rights and legitimate interests. At the same time, Araghchi reiterated Tehran’s firm rejection of any discussions that would amount to unilateral or forced imposition.

During the call, Cooper reiterated the UK government’s position, stressing the necessity of pursuing diplomacy and engagement to resolve outstanding issues related to Iran’s nuclear program. Both sides also exchanged views on bilateral matters, including consular and citizen-related issues, highlighting the importance of maintaining open channels of communication to strengthen mutual understanding.

The two diplomats agreed on the need for ongoing consultations at multiple levels to follow up on shared concerns and interests. Araghchi’s remarks reflect Iran’s broader position that while it is open to constructive dialogue, negotiations must respect its sovereignty and legal rights, rather than serving as a platform for external pressure or unilateral demands.
