Government Closure Reaches New Record with Congress Locked in Political Standoff

ALWAGHT- Now in its 36th day, the US government shutdown has set a new record, as another Senate attempt to advance a funding bill has collapsed, leaving no clear path to a deal.

The US government shutdown has reached its 36th day, becoming the longest in the nation’s history. The funding stalemate stems from a clash over extending Affordable Care Act tax credits, which Democrats insist are crucial but Republicans removed from their proposal. With the House largely inactive since September, the Senate has been forced to take the lead on negotiations.

The prolonged shutdown is already straining the country. Nearly 1.4 million federal employees are either furloughed or working without pay, food banks are seeing growing demand, and funding for food stamps is running low. The Congressional Budget Office warns the economic impact could reach $14 billion in lost GDP if the impasse continues.

Political tensions remain high as both parties trade blame. Republicans accuse Democrats of obstructing a deal, while Democrats argue the GOP must agree to protect health care affordability. Senate leaders signal a desire to end the standoff, but a breakthrough has yet to emerge.
