Bahrain Activist Recounts Inmates Ordeal

Bahrain Activist Recounts Inmates Ordeal

Alwaght-A prominent Bahraini human rights activist has warned about the dire condition of political prisoners in the regime's detention centers.

In an interview with Press TV, Nabeel Rajab compared the status of Bahrain's prisons to those of the Nazi's time.

“People are being treated badly”. Most or majority or hundred percent of the police over there in those jails are being brought from outside. The communication between the Bahraini political prisoners and those people are very bad because…they have brought them from outside…,” he said.

“Those guys are all criminal where in reality, those people (prisoners) are very much respected in the society. You’re talking about political prisoners, doctors, engineers, nurses, and academics.”

Rajab said the detention centers have a systematic torture program, which sometimes turns deadly.

The activist also said diseases, especially skin conditions, have spread in the jails and that inmates have to sleep on harsh places.

He went on to say that although the government has been told about the conditions, nothing has been done so far.

Bahrain has been the scene of almost daily protests against the al-Khalifa dynasty since early 2011 when a pro-democracy uprising began in the kingdom.

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of pro-democracy protesters have held numerous rallies in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.

Bahrain has been severely criticized by human rights groups for its harsh crackdown on anti-government protesters, which has claimed the lives of scores of people so far.
