ALWAGHT- Iran’s government spokeswoman has announced Tehran’s readiness to reopen its embassy in Damascus, as Syria faces challenges following Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militants’ takeover two weeks ago.
Iran has expressed readiness to reopen its embassy in Damascus, with government spokeswoman Mohajerani confirming ongoing diplomatic talks for the initiative. Speaking at a press conference, she emphasized Iran’s consistent diplomatic approach and highlighted mutual preparedness for the embassy’s reopening. The development comes amid Syria’s significant challenges following the December 8 takeover by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militants, which ended Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year presidency.
Syria’s stability is under threat from multiple factors, including Israel’s continued occupation of Syrian territory, the presence of US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the north, and human rights violations by HTS militants. Escalating humanitarian crises, such as worsening food insecurity, further compound these issues. Mohajerani underscored Iran’s commitment to a government in Syria chosen by its citizens and emphasized the importance of safeguarding Syria’s territorial integrity and preventing the rise of terrorism.
Iran views combating terrorism as essential for Syria and the region’s stability. Mohajerani highlighted Iran’s aim to shield Syria from terrorism’s adverse effects and ensure regional security. Echoing her remarks, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei reiterated Iran’s commitment to preserving Syria’s sovereignty, stating that the Syrian people have the exclusive right to determine their future without foreign interference.
Baqaei also criticized the continued presence of American forces in Syria, arguing it undermines the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He called on the international community to adopt a clear stance against foreign interference in Syria and warned of the broader implications of regional instability, stressing that insecurity in one nation can quickly spread to others.
