Russian SU-24 Jet Gunned Down or Turkish F-16 Shot It Down?

Alwaght- Turkish F-16's shot down a Russian SU-24 jet on Nov. 24 near the Syrian border after it violated Turkish airspace, Turkey Based hurriyetdailynews.com reported .

The Defense Ministry, however, stated "Today, as most likely a result of a strike from the ground a Su-24 plane from the Russian aviation group in the Syrian Arab Republic crashed in the territory of Syria".

The Su-24 bomber jet was in Syrian airspace at the altitude 6,000 meters, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

According to the preliminary reports, the plane was gunned down from the ground, Russia-based Sputnik reported.

"The jet crashed into tents in Latakia’s Yamadi village near the Syrian border where Turkmens are currently staying, according to Turkmen sources," Hurriyet reported adding  "Two pilots were seen landing with the aid of parachutes, the witnesses said ".

One of the pilots has been captured by Turkmen forces in the region, and the search for the second pilot continues, CNNTürk reported citing local sources .

Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu spoke with Chief of Staff Hulusi Akar and Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioğlu on the incident, the Prime Minister's Office said .

Turkey will consult with NATO and UN on Syria border developments, PM's Office added .

Gen. Akar also informed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of the incident, private broadcaster NTV reported .

However, Russian Defense Ministry said the downed jet did not violate Turkish airspace, adding that the fate of the pilots was unclear .
