ALWAGHT- According to researchers, almost 100,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023.
A new study led by University of London economist Professor Michael Spagat and Palestinian political scientist Khalil Shikaki surveyed 2,000 households in Gaza, covering nearly 10,000 people. The researchers found that by January 2025, approximately 75,200 people had died violently during the Israeli aggression, mostly due to Israeli munitions, with an additional 8,540 non-violent deaths. Since then, over 10,000 more deaths have been reported, bringing the total fatalities close to 100,000.
The study reveals that the Gaza Health Ministry’s reported death toll underestimates the true scale of the crisis, which is worsened by hunger, disease, and attacks on food distribution centers. Professor Spagat described the conflict as one of the bloodiest of the 21st century, noting that about 4 percent of Gaza’s population has been killed—a proportion unmatched in recent history. Notably, 56 percent of the victims were women and children, a figure more than double that seen in nearly all other recent conflicts.
The Israeli military offensive began on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas operation against Israel, which was in response to longstanding Israeli actions against Palestinians. Despite the high Palestinian death toll, Israel has not succeeded in its stated goals of eliminating Hamas or securing the release of captives in Gaza, underscoring the ongoing intensity and complexity of the conflict.
