Alwaght- As the brutal Saudi-led aggression on Yemen nears its eight month, the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed warned on Tuesday that the situation in the impoverished state is deteriorating rapidly.
In a post on his Facebook page, the UN envoy renewed
confirmation of the importance to return to dialogue table as soon as possible.
“The situation in Yemen is likely to reach dangerous stages in record time
unless there is a return to peace talks,” Ismail said.
He called for the return to dialogue “as an only alternative option to rescue
this country and its people.”
Last week Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement expressed conditional support for a UN-brokered peace plan put forward in talks previously held in Oman.
Yemen’s Saba Net news agency quoted Ansarullah spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam as saying last Wednesday that the Ansarullah movement will agree to the seven-point peace plan, which also requires adherence to UN Resolution 2216, if other parties to the conflict also commit to the initiative.
The belligerent Saudi regime has defiantly placed obstacles in the Yemen peace process as it continues bombarding its poor southern neighbor.
Yemen is suffering what the United Nations has designated as one of its highest-level humanitarian crises but aid efforts have been severely hampered by ongoing fighting and air and sea ports being blocked for long periods.
Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen to impose fugitive president Abed Rabbu Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed over 6,300 Yemenis, mostly innocent civilians including hundreds of women and children.
Despite Riyadh’s claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah resistance fighters, who are warding off the foreign occupation of their country, Saudi warplanes are indiscriminately targeting residential areas and civilian infrastructure.
