Iran: IAEA Should Uphold Political Neutrality and Technical Professionalism

ALWAGHT- Iran urges the IAEA to maintain its technical focus, avoid political influence, and withstand pressure from the United States and Europe.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in a second call within a week, ahead of an IAEA Board of Governors meeting where the US and European trio (Britain, France, Germany) are expected to propose a resolution against Iran over its cooperation with the agency. Araghchi emphasized that Iran has maintained a “constructive and responsible” approach with the IAEA, engaging in diplomatic initiatives and regional consultations to preserve peace and stability. Tehran warned that it would undertake a “fundamental review” of its engagement with the UN nuclear watchdog if a new resolution is adopted.

The context of heightened tensions stems from June attacks on Iranian nuclear sites by Israel and the US, after which Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA. Iranian officials accused the agency of providing cover for the strikes by declaring Iran in violation of non-proliferation obligations while failing to condemn the attacks. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stressed that Iran hopes the European powers act rationally but reaffirmed the country’s readiness to reconsider its policies if the resolution is formally presented.

Lavrov welcomed Iran’s framework for regional cooperation and expressed Russia’s willingness to maintain close coordination with Tehran. He highlighted Russia’s efforts at the UN to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and reiterated Moscow’s support for Palestinian self-determination, opposing any measures that would undermine the rights of the Palestinian people.
