Alwaght- Authorities in Britain and the US have banned laptops and other electronic devices on in-bound flights from several Muslim-majority countries.
A US official said the ban would apply to nonstop flights to the US from 10 airports in eight countries in the West Asia and North Africa.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed that terrorists are seeking "innovative methods" to bring down passenger planes amid fears that bombs could be hidden in laptops, tablets, cameras, DVD players and electronic games. The list of countries includes Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt.
The list of airlines affected by the ban includes Royal Jordanian, EgyptAir, Turkish Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Etihad Airways.
Britain also announced a similar ban with UK airlines affected by the ban including British Airways, EasyJet, Jet2.com, Monarch, Thomas Cook and Thomson.
"The Prime Minister has chaired a number of meetings on aviation security over the last few weeks," a spokesperson for prime minister Theresa May says.
Passengers will not be allowed to take phones, laptops or tablets larger than 16cm in length, 9.3cm in width and 1.5cm in depth on board planes.
The UK government has affected direct flights from six countries - Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. Affected airlines have until Friday to comply with the new restrictions, which will be in place indefinitely.
