ALWAGHT- Iran has denounced the IAEA Board of Governors’ decision to refer Tehran to the UN Security Council, arguing that the politically motivated resolution threatens the international non-proliferation system and fails to account for the ongoing conflict.
An anti-Iran resolution drafted by the US, Britain, France, and Germany was adopted by the IAEA Board of Governors with 23 votes in favor, while Russia, China, and Niger opposed it and eight countries abstained. The resolution calls for IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to report Iran to the UN Security Council and General Assembly.
Iran’s mission to the IAEA condemned the move as politically motivated, warning that it could further weaken the global nuclear non-proliferation regime. Tehran blamed the current nuclear dispute on US and Israeli military actions, rejecting claims that Western pressure could force Iran into surrender.
The Iranian mission also accused Western powers of hypocrisy, arguing that they advocate diplomacy while conducting attacks on Iran’s safeguarded nuclear facilities. It cited civilian casualties from the conflict and said the IAEA resolution could not reverse what Tehran described as the failure of US and Israeli policies.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi similarly criticized the resolution’s logic, arguing that foreign strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities disrupted inspections and were then used to justify further action against Tehran. He described the diplomatic initiative as an attempt to compensate for what he called failed military and political strategies.
Iran’s UN ambassador in Vienna, Reza Najafi, called the resolution a political tool and said Iran would cooperate with inspectors only when security conditions allow. Although the referral marks the first such move against Tehran in two decades, analysts say it is largely symbolic, with Russia and China expected to block any punitive Security Council measures.
