Iran Describes Its Counterproposal to US as ‘Reasonable and Responsible’

ALWAGHT- Iran's proposal to the US, sent through Pakistan, contained reasonable demands and generous proposals that serve Iran, the wider region, and the world, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei.

During his weekly press briefing in Tehran on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei addressed Iran's proposal—delivered to the US through mediator Pakistan—in response to an earlier American peace proposal aimed at ending the war launched by the US and Israel on February 28. The fragile ceasefire has largely held despite sporadic clashes in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has maintained control and introduced shipping regulations as part of its self-defense measures. After US President Donald Trump described Iran's response as "unacceptable," Baghaei stated that Iran's reply contained "reasonable and responsible demands, as well as generous proposals" beneficial not only for Iran but for the stability and security of the entire region and the world.

Baghaei held the US and Israel responsible for disruptions to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, noting that Iranian vessels have been attacked in international waters over the past 70 to 80 days. He warned that any outside intervention in West Asian issues—including reports of Britain sending warships and Egypt moving fighter jets to the UAE—will further complicate the situation. Baghaei emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz was open before the February 28 war and that the core problem lies in the US-Israeli aggression against Iran. He also rejected allegations that Iran is a "bullying power," instead describing Iran as a "responsible power" while calling the US presence in the region a "cycle of violence and bullying" and the biggest threat to international peace.

On Trump's threats to use atomic weapons against Iran, Baghaei called such remarks contradictory and opposed to international law, stressing that nuclear-armed states are banned from using such weapons against other nations while reaffirming Iran's ability to defend itself. He addressed reports of an Israeli military base in Iraq, saying Iran will discuss the matter with Iraqi officials. Baghaei also dismissed Western media claims that Iran released oil into the sea as "sheer lies," expressing serious concern for the maritime environment. Finally, responding to Trump's criticism of previous US presidents for allegedly making Iranians "laugh" with hundreds of billions of dollars, Baghaei asserted that no American leader—regardless of who was in the White House—has ever brought smiles to the Iranian people's faces.
