ALWAGHT- According to Russia's permanent representative to international bodies in Vienna, European NATO nations are fixated on the idea of an "inevitable war in Europe" and are keen to show they are ready for such a conflict.
On Saturday evening, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, wrote on X that European NATO members are "obsessed with the idea of an inevitable war in Europe" and eager to demonstrate their mental and technical readiness for it. Pointing to the "Northern Strike 26" military exercises taking place in Finland from May 2 to May 12, 2026—just 70 kilometers from the Russian border along the Karelian section—Ulyanov warned that NATO appears to be "actually paving the way for a real war." The drills involve the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Norway, Hungary, Poland, Estonia, and Lithuania as part of a broader series of exercises held throughout April and May.
