ALWAGHT- The Energy Minister stated that President Masoud Pezeshkian has directed political authorities to take stronger measures to safeguard Iran’s water rights from Afghanistan.
Iran and Turkmenistan are entitled to share water from the Hari River, but Afghanistan’s construction of the Salma Dam has complicated allocations. Iranian officials must also negotiate over the Afghan-India Friendship Dam to ensure Iran receives its rightful share, according to Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi.
Speaking at the inauguration of new renewable energy and efficiency projects, Aliabadi outlined the status of transboundary water negotiations. He noted that despite extensive talks with Afghan authorities, Iran did not receive its full water allocation last year, though higher rainfall this year may improve the situation.
Aliabadi highlighted ongoing diplomatic efforts, including two invitations extended to Afghan officials to visit Iran, with a third planned if needed. He also stated that Iran is prepared to send a delegation to Afghanistan to follow up directly and ensure serious progress in securing its water rights.
