ALWAGHT- Satellite images reveal Israel maintains and strengthens military positions in southern Lebanon, a year after its ceasefire with Hezbollah.
The Israeli military currently occupies five strategic positions along the Blue Line, the de facto border with Lebanon, with fortified outposts connected by widened roads. The bases, each covering one to two hectares, include areas for temporary buildings and military vehicles, and some lie deep inside Lebanese territory, including one just 150 meters from a UN peacekeeping station. Nearby villages have suffered near-total destruction due to systematic Israeli demolitions.
Israel maintains these positions claiming they prevent Hezbollah military activity, but analysts note that the tactics resemble those used in Gaza. UNIFIL reports nearly 10,000 violations of the ceasefire in the past year, including over 7,500 air and nearly 2,500 ground breaches. The November 2024 ceasefire required a full withdrawal within 60 days, which Israel has not observed.
Tensions escalated further with Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah commander Haitham Tabatabai near Beirut. Hezbollah warned of potential retaliation, and Lebanese President Michel Aoun condemned the strike as evidence of Israel’s disregard for international appeals, calling on the global community to prevent further aggression against Lebanon.
