ALWAGHT- Iran is preparing to host the Economic Cooperation Organization’s interior ministers’ meeting in Tehran for the first time in 15 years, a move officials say aligns with the government’s strategy to deepen regional and partner-state collaboration.
The spokesperson for Iran’s Interior Ministry announced that the meeting of interior ministers from member states of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) will be held in Tehran on October 27 and 28.
Ali Zeinivand said the event, taking place after a 15-year hiatus, aligns with the government’s policy of fostering engagement and expanding cooperation with neighboring and like-minded nations. He noted that the ECO region, home to roughly 500 million people, holds major geopolitical, energy, and industrial potential—creating favorable conditions for advancing a free trade agreement and promoting trade liberalization.
According to Zeinivand, Iran has proposed several initiatives, including the creation of special free trade zones among member states, given that tariff removal and broader trade liberalization have yet to be realized in the region. Founded in Tehran in 1985, the ECO is a Eurasian political and economic intergovernmental organization dedicated to regional development and cooperation.
