ALWAGHT- Iran has criticized Britain, France, and Germany for seeking to reinstate UN sanctions through the so-called snapback mechanism, saying it expects other countries to disregard the European trio’s move.
At his weekly press conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei sharply criticized Britain, France, and Germany for reinstating UN sanctions against Iran under the snapback mechanism, calling the move “irrational” and a reflection of US influence. He accused the European trio of acting against their own interests and undermining their credibility as JCPOA signatories. Baghaei urged the international community not to comply with the sanctions, calling them an imposition on the UN Security Council’s authority.
Baghaei denounced the E3’s “irresponsible and destructive” approach toward Iran’s nuclear issue, accusing them of misusing the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism. While rejecting any immediate plans for negotiation with the European trio, he emphasized that Iran remains open to diplomacy when it serves the country’s interests. Tehran continues to reject accusations of JCPOA non-compliance, saying the move is illegitimate since the US withdrew from the deal in 2018.
The spokesman also criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency’s latest report, claiming it allowed the US and Israel to exploit Iran’s nuclear issue for political purposes. He blamed Israel for orchestrating the US withdrawal from the JCPOA and reaffirmed that Iran’s nuclear program remains peaceful, as confirmed by IAEA assessments. Baghaei said these developments proved that the US cannot be trusted and uses the nuclear issue as a pretext to pressure the Iranian people.
On regional security, Baghaei warned neighboring countries against allowing their airspace or territory to be used for hostile actions against Iran, calling such acts “unacceptable” and a violation of international law. He said Iran reserves the right to respond to any threats appropriately. He also noted that Iran had not opposed the idea of the US joining multilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly regarding the sanctions issue, but claimed that the European trio and Washington refused to participate, reflecting internal divisions within their camp.
